Coral reefs are ecosystems formed by stony (hard) corals near the surface of the ocean. They’re sometimes called the rainforests of the sea because living coral is only one part of the reef ecosystem -- reefs are key habitats for fish, seagrass, algae, and other types of marine life. That makes them vital for tourism, aquaculture, and biodiversity. They even provide protection from major storms by acting as a barrier between waves and land. A healthy coral reef is a beautiful, lively community. They’re present in many parts of the world, including the Florida Keys in the US and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. But in the past few decades, coral reefs have been under attack. They are threatened by climate change (increasing ocean temperatures and ocean acidification) and human activities, like overfishing.
