Pandas are widely known to be peaceful, solitary creatures and are regarded as one of China’s most popular symbols. However, the ever-growing construction of roads and railroads in rural China has begun splitting up the forests where pandas dwell, separating populations thus making already painstakingly slow breeding efforts more difficult. Deforestation in China is another huge threat, with large swaths of bamboo woodland being cut down, the Panda’s main source of food, for housing and agricultural practices. With the giant panda being such an icon, many of the world’s leading wildlife organizations have garnered attention to assist in the livelihood of these wonderful creatures by creating “green corridors”, building nature reserves, and captive breeding programs.
