Newday’s Protect the Poles initiative intends to address the challenges facing the North and South poles of our planet. Although the Arctic and Antarctic might seem like harsh, uninhabitable environments, they are actually home to a wide range of people and wildlife. Indigenous peoples have thrived in the Arctic, from Alaska to Greenland and beyond, for thousands of years. Whales, polar bears, penguins, and other beloved animals call the poles home.
Some of the most serious problems facing the polar regions are global warming, habitat destruction, and weakened communities. Global climate change has already dramatically changed both poles. For example, sea ice extent (a measure of how much ice is present in the Arctic and Southern Oceans) is far below the average from previous decades. Oil companies are attempting to drill offshore in the Arctic, which risks damage to habitats from ships and drilling operations. Human communities, including Alaska Native communities, are facing food insecurity and poor economic opportunities.
Non-profits are working on the front lines every day to solve problems facing coral reefs and dependant marine wildlife.
